"… It shall not be…" Amos 7:1-6
God will relent! When we intercede in response to a prophetic vision or revelation God will relent, soften the blow, or withdraw the judgment entirely. God showed Amos that He was gathering locust swarms that were going to denude the land and eat the crops, leaving the people destitute. Amos asked Him to forgive and have mercy and and God did! Then, God showed him that He was going to destroy Israel with fire. Amos again interceded and God, in response to Amos’ prayer, relented.
God responded the same way with Moses when, after Israel worshiped the golden calf in the wilderness. He made plans for destroying Israel and making Moses’ decendents into a nation. Yet Moses prayed and God changed His mind! (Exodus 32:11-14) King Hezekiah of Judea asked God to relent after a prophet told him he was going to die – and God added 15 years to his life. (2 Kings 20:1-6)
We especially need to remember this in America today. God has been showing the prophets that He is bringing judgment on America’s sins. Yet, when we respond by asking for mercy, He hears us and is willing to change His mind. Remember this next time you pray for America.
